Louisiana Saturday Night ~ Mel McDaniel
Maybe it’s all the Saints Superbowl madness going on. Maybe it’s because I know my pal @shamrox7 is living it up in NOLA right now. Who knows. But this is the song I woke up to this morning.
Circa 1981, my mom belonged to Columbia House record club. Yes, youthful ones. I said records. (Do you remember this, @SJWestfall and @stewsma?) Mel McDaniel, The Statler Brothers, Alabama, Ronnie Milsap and Reba McEntire got a lot of airtime in my childhood home. While contemporary country music makes me cringe, hearing these classic country crooners takes me back. And I like it.
Hold Your Head High ~ Heartless Bastards
This might be my theme song. It makes my heart beat a little faster. And sometimes, I can barely breathe when I hear it.
This clip is Erika Wennerstrom, solo and acoustic. Her voice is so distinctive and so…unreal. Much like how I feel about Natalie Merchant, I’d pay to hear her sing the phone book.
If you want more Heartless Bastards, check out their recent Austin City Limits performance. They follow the Avett Brothers, who are worth a watch as well.
Home ~ Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
I loved this song the instant I first heard it on CD101. Then it made an appearance on a fantastic mix made by @jennysigler. It’s been on repeat ever since. So it’s no surprise I woke up with it this morning.

The New Kid Revival ~ Her Space Holiday
I dare you to listen to this song without involuntarily snapping your fingers or clapping your hands. It’s like voodoo. You’ll just do it.

Archer Woman ~ Damion Suomi
A very sweet lilting voice to wake up to.
Only thing? Listening to Damion Suomi’s music kinda makes me want to loll around and drink bourbon all day.
Not great for productivity, but good for the soul.
