Waiting on a Friend ~ Rolling Stones
Actually, I think it was Eddie Vedder’s voice singing this to me, but how am I supposed to resist posting this badass video?
I remember rushing home from school in the fourth grade with my best friend, Beth, to watch MTV. No one else I knew had it, plus she had one of those super sweet console televisions with the remote control attached by a wire.
This video was in heavy rotation back in those days.
We’d have heated arguments about who got to be Martha Quinn, introducing each song on the MTV mixtapes we made on her purple jambox in her Rick Springfield themed bedroom.
Finally, Beth acquiesced and gave me Martha. She had her sights set a little higher. She’d take Madonna.
We were ten and Beth already knew what she wanted. She lived and loved music so much even as a child. She made a career in music. She worked in NYC in development for Dreamworks. She dated musicians and became part of their trusted inner circle.
And when she died too young of a pulmonary embolism, Joan Jett and Henry Rollins played concerts in her memory.
When I hear the Rolling Stones I think of Beth, and I wonder who she’d be today. Still Madonna, no doubt.
